Bowling isn’t just strikes and spares when we play at Xushida. It’s also about keeping score of our scores. We keep score to understand our performance and to challenge our friends and family in a fun way. This guide will cover some bowling scorekeeping tips, mistakes to avoid, how technology makes it easier, and how to use a bowling scorecard.
But that’s not how scoring works in bowling. This is especially true so that we can see how many pins we have knocked down and how many points we have received. Keeping score helps us track progress over time. And it’s so much fun to celebrate when we score a strike or a spare!
One tip: Keep track of how many pins you knock down on each ball. If you knock down all 10 pins on the first try, that’s a strike, and you can score 10 points, plus the points from your next two rolls. If you strike by knocking down all 10 pins with two balls, that’s a spare, and you get 10 points plus whatever is knocked down on your next roll.
A second useful trick: frame scoring — or that I call the frames. A bowling game consists of 10 frames, and in each frame you can roll two balls. You can see your score along with what you need to work on, by tracking scores in each frame.

One frequent error is failing to mark your spares and strikes on the scorecard. Be sure to record your scores for each frame so you know your points. Miscalculating your scores is another mistake you can make. You can ensure the correctness of your scores and keep the game even by double-checking your math.

With advancements in technology, scoring in bowling has become easier. Most bowling alleys use automatic electronic scoreboards, which display your scores automatically after each roll. Some even have digital scorecards to actually track your scores, so you don’t have to write them down. Technology allows us to spend more time playing and less time counting.

If you are using one of these bowling scorecard, it is important that you know how to fill it out. The first step is to write your name at the top of the scorecard so everyone knows whose scores they’re entering. After that, use the frames on the scorecard to note your scores for each frame. Don’t forget to label your spares with a "/" and your strikes with an "X" to indicate how many points you’ve accumulated.
